Dr Adroaldo Zanella (Associate professor) »

My main interest is on the role of early environmental factors in shaping the coping responses of animals, including humans. After training as a veterinary surgeon, I worked as a swine practitioner for five years in Brazil, dealing primarily with outdoor pig production systems. My passion for animal welfare originated with my involvement in our pioneer high welfare pig unit in Paim Filho, RS. Subsequently, I worked at the Instituto de Pesquisas Veterinárias Desidério Finamor in Guaiba, RS, looking primarily at anaerobic pathogens relevant to both sheep and pig. I also gained experience in extension work at the EMATER/ACARESC, in Florianópolis, Brazil, where we developed an extensive network implementing and testing outdoor pig production units.

In 1992, I completed my Ph.D. at Cambridge University under the supervision of Professor Don Broom. My thesis research addressed some neurophysiological markers relevant to human and animal welfare and demonstrated that opioid receptors were down-regulated in sows with high levels of stereotypies. In Cambridge, I worked with Dr. Michael Mendl and together we developed an extensive battery of tests to combine physiology and behavioral indicators in the assessment of pig welfare. Following my Ph.D., I was hired by the Institut für Tierhygiene, Verhaltenskunde und Tierschutz der Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität in Germany http://www.vetmed.uni-muenchen.de/tierhyg/home.html, to study physiological and neurophysiological indicators of animal welfare, under the direction of Professor Jürgen Unshelm. During this time, I extended my work on non-invasive markers of stress in domestic and wild captive animals, whilst continuing my work investigating the modulation of opioid receptors by stressful events. This research demonstrated that social isolation stress could alter opioid receptor expression in pigs.

In 1996, I started the current Animal Behavior and Welfare program within the department of Animal Science at Michigan State University. My major focus is research (75%) and I also teach undergraduate and graduate level courses in this area of science. The primary goal of my research program is to understand the role of early environmental factors on the regulation of the stress axis, behavioral development and brain organization. Alongside my commitments within MSU, I am member of the International Society for Applied Ethology; Brazilian College of Veterinary Surgeons, Animal Behavior; Association for the Study of Animal Behaviour, International Society for Anthrozoology; American Association of Animal Science & International Society of Animal Hygiene. I am also on the editorial board of the Brazilian Veterinary Journal, A Hora Veterinária, and contribute with animal welfare articles in every edition of this influential journal.
