Christopher Pittard teaches in the School of English Literature, Language and Linguistics at Newcastle University, UK. He has published widely on Victorian fiction and popular culture, including articles in Clues: A Journal of Detection, Victorian Periodicals Review, and Women: A Cultural Review, chapters on Victorian and twentieth century detective fiction for The Blackwell Companion to Crime Fiction (2009) and A History of the Novel in English 1880-1940 (Oxford, 2009), and a forthcoming monograph, Purity and Contamination in Victorian Detective Fiction (2010). His primary research interests include the Victorian fin de siecle, crime and detective fiction, magic and conjuring, and the cultural history of the London Underground.
