Silvia Núñez García is currently the Director for Centro de Investigaciones sobre América del Norte, UNAM, México. Previously she had been the Academic Secretary for the Center for Research on North America (CISAN). She possesses graduate degrees in sociology from the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM). She has been a Visiting Scholar at Georgetown University, a Fellow from the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars (Latin American Program) in 1999, and also a Distinguished Visiting Scholar in 2004 at the Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies from Michigan State University.

She has been an associate researcher and professor of U.S. studies since Sept. 1989 at  UNAM. During these years, she has focused in studying cultural processes and social issues such as class inequality, poverty and social movements in the United States and their comparison to Mexico. Among her publications are the books Clase y Sociedad en los Estados Unidos, coauthored with Dr. James Russell (CISAN-UNAM, 1997); and México en el Pensamiento Económico, Político y Social de los Estados Unidos (Centro de Investigaciones en Ciencias y Humanidades-UNAM, 1995), co-authored with  Adolfo Aguilar Zínser. In 2003, ECLAC and UNO published Prof. Núñez essay on “Género y Programas de Combate a la Pobreza en México: ¿Reconocimiento al Capital Social?”
