Gerd Bayer received his Ph.D. in English from Erlangen University, Germany, where he returned to a tenured position after teaching at the University of Toronto, Case Western Reserve University, and the University of Wisconsin – Whitewater. His research focuses on postmodern fiction, ecocriticism, postcolonial literature, cinema, holocaust studies, and pop culture. He has published journal articles and book chapters in these academic fields, as well as a book (in German) on John Fowles and nature (2004), edited Mediating Germany: Popular Culture Between Tradition and Innovation (2006), the Europe volume of The World Encyclopedia of Popular Culture (2007), and Heavy Metal Music in Britain (2009), and co-edited a volume (in German) on literature and holocaust (2008). He is currently working on genre and Renaissance prose narratives.
