Bioassessment, Large River, and Wetland Research

Collecting Insects for Bioassessmen

Research on large rivers over the past 15 years has involved work on : 1)the evaluation of the restoration of the Kissimmee River in south Florida using macoinvertebrates; and 2) the development and application of a macroinvertebrate functional group approach in the bioassessment of remnant river oxbows in the Caloosahatchee River in southwest Florida. We've also helped develop a protocol for the assessment of large rivers in Michigan with the Michigan Department of Environmental Equality (MDEQ). Ken Cummins and I have spent time in Brazil (Curritiba and Manaus) trying to develop metrics to assess stream conditions in this country due to human perturbations. A previous graduate student (Mollie McIntosh) investigated the use of macroinvertebrates as indicators of water quality in wetlands in Michigan. We are also conducting bioassessment studies on the St. Johns River in Florida. There are several papers listed below that have resulted from the above research projects and related areas.
