In addition to this lab work, students will participate in a range of activities designed to bolster their research skills and further their professional development. Examples of these activities include

- a 2-day "statistics boot camp" that assesses students' backgrounds in statistics and provides tools to improve their skills in data analysis and experimental design

- discussions of responsible conduct of research

- strategies for applying to graduate school

- career opportunities in the biological sciences

- outreach activities at Fenner Nature Center

- presentation of research results at the Mid-Michigan Symposium for Undergraduate Research Experiences
