Knight wrote about religion and social ethics throughout his career. The Economic Order and Religion was a collaborative project with Thornton W. Merriam (Director of U.S.O. Traning for the National Council of the Y.M.C.A.). The book was intended to bring the differences among Americans' approaches to economic ethics into high relief by presenting two contrasting viewpoints, and allowing the authors to comment on each other's perspective.

Prior to collaborating with Merriam, Knight had begun work on a book on religion, economics and social ethics. When the collaborative project emerged in the early 1940s as a realistic opportunity, the material already written was re-worked into the multi-chapter essay (entitled "Liberalism and Christianity") included in this monograph.

Those interested in Knight's views on economics and religion should also consult "Ethics and Economic Reform" (1939; included in Freedom & Reform and Selected Essays, vol. 2); "Religion and Ethics in Modern Civilization" (1941; included in Freedom & Reform); and "The Rights of Man and Natural Law" (1944; included in Freedom & Reform and Selected Essays, vol. 2).
