Welcome Party 2009

We started the new semester with a Welcome Party to greet the new Sri Lankan student who arrived at MSU during the summer and fall semesters. The main purpose of this event was to provide an opportunity for the new students and their families to mingle and acquaint with the MSU SLSA community. The event was enriched with an assortment of Sri Lankan cuisine prepared by our members. We concluded the event with the launch of the new SLSA website.

Tsunami Donations 2004

On 26th of December 2004, an earthquake in the Indian Ocean resulted in a devastating tsunami. Sri Lanka was one of the worst hit. The tsunami left thousands of people dead and close to 2 million individuals displaced. In addition, there was colossal structural damage to property and infrastructure in the coastal areas, especially in the south, east and north-eastern parts of the country.

SLSA organized a fund-raising campaign to assist university students affected by the tsunami in Sri Lanka and collaborated with the Faculty of Science at the University of Colombo to contribute the collected funds to their "Students Tsunami Relief Fund".

The Office for International Students and Scholars (OISS) at MSU willingly opened a special account on behalf of the Sri Lankan Tsunami Victims to which interested parties could donate. This great humanitarian cause received significant media coverage and was able to make a considerable donation to the victims. This project was continued during the next two years. The success of the campaign was recognized by the department of Student Life with a Student Life Leadership Award for Civic Responsibility.

Flood Relief 2003

In May 2003, unexpected floods and landslides in the central region of Sri Lanka killed at least 200 and left 350,000 Sri Lankans homeless. The Sri Lankan government appealed for international assistance. Our association responded to this appeal by organizing a fundraiser to collect funds to assist the flood victims. We appealed for donations from fellow students, faculty members, local community and Sri Lankan expatriates. The SLSA successfully collected US $400 and these funds were used to obtain playground material for a primary school that was destroyed by the floods.
