In addition to medical student exchanges, the Institute of International Health also facilitates shadowing experiences for international physicians. In October 2011, Dr. Rafaelina Perez from the Dominican Republic participated in a month long shadowing experience designed for her by IIH. Dr. Perez spent a week at the MSU Clinical Center, one week at the Ingham County Health Department, and two weeks on various rotations at Sparrow Hospital. Dr. Perez was overwhelmed with the education and experiences she came away with. Dr. Perez was also the clinical coordinator in the Dominican Republic for IIH's Dominican Republic study abroad course.

Also, earlier this month, the Institute of International Health organized Maíra Charone to visit from Brazil for IIH's international observational rotation exchange program. Maíra worked at Ingham Regional Medical Center for a week in the month of January. These opportunities have strengthened Michigan State University's College of Osteopathic Medicine and the Institute of International Health's international relationships in global health.
"The experience I had at Ingham Regional Medical Center, although brief, was, by far, one of the most constructive of my academic journey. There, I could see several cases and patients, from the simplest to the most complex. Also, I was able to understand better the multi-professional and multi-disciplinary clinic and appreciate different epidemiological profiles which greatly contributed to my diagnostic analysis. The cordiality of those responsible for my visit and of all coordinators, directors, physicians, residents, nurses and every other employees were fundamental and made me feel very welcome since the beginning. It is encouraging to see a hospital that, despite the immense territorial dimension, every professionals are very integrated and willing to help. It was, with no doubts, a great experience, not only to add knowledge to my resume, but for life."
