News and Events

NIH Public Access Policy

Beginning April 7, The National Institutes of Health (NIH) required that all manuscripts based on NIH-funded research be submitted to PubMed Central when they are accepted for publication. A number of journals will submit the articles directly (see the list of journals). The process for submitting articles accepted by other journals is outlined on the NIH Web site describing the Public Access Policy. The site also includes answers to frequently asked questions. By May 25, proposals and other documents submitted to NIH must include the PubMed Central reference number for the authors’ articles that are cited. The policy implements a section of the Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2008. Its goal is to make research results readily available to the public. MSU researchers wanting help to resolve copyright and other questions related to meeting the requirement can contact Contract and Grant Administration (355-5040), the Office of Research Facilitation (432-4499), MSU Technologies (355-2186), or the Office of the General Counsel (353-3530).

SPG update

A dozen full proposals were invited for submission in the Strategic Partnership Grants (SPG) competition this year. The Council of Research Deans (CORD) recommended their selection after reviewing the 40 preproposals submitted earlier this year. Full proposals were due April 10. Decisions will be made and funds awarded by July 1.

NRC program assessment update

The National Research Council (NRC) now plans to release data and ratings in its assessment of doctoral programs in early fall. Meanwhile, the agency is working on data cleaning with a set of universities that had submitted incomplete data. News about NRC ratings and rankings is available on the NRC Web.

21st Century Jobs Fund

The Michigan Economic Development Corporation (MEDC) has posted a draft RFP for the 2008 21st Century Jobs Fund competition. As proposed, the competition is open only to for-profit companies meeting specified criteria. A university collaboration, however, will strengthen a company’s proposal. More information is available at the RFPs and Funding Opportunities blog.

Research in the news

MSU research appears regularly in local, national, and international media, and University Relations tracks those mentions. To subscribe to a daily e-mail report of media citations of MSU research and other activities, go to . The report also includes links to articles about higher education.

New online

The MSUGrant e-mail list maintained by librarian Jon Harrison for more than a decade has been replaced by a blog.  Individuals can subscribe to RSS feeds to be notified of updates. Harrison’s Web, Grants and Related Resources, remains available with links to funding agencies and other information.

New requests for proposals related to the environment are regularly posted on a funding page on the Environmental Science and Policy Program (ESPP) Web.

The Office of Research in the College of Human Medicine has redesigned its Web to offer links to funding sources, information about conducting research at MSU, and more.  The office also produces a research newsletter, available as a PDF at the site.
