Pennock, professor in Lyman Briggs College, were elected fellows of the
American Association for the Advancement of Science.
Gretchen Birbeck,
associate professor of neurology and ophthalmology, and epidemiology, was

N. Edward Robinson,
Matilda R. Wilson professor of large animal clinical sciences, was named an
honorary diplomate of the American college of Veterinary Internal Medicine.
Bruce Dale was
named 2007 Sterling B. Hendricks Memorial Lecturer by the U.S. Department of
Agriculture. He also was invited to the White House as an expert on biofuels.
Barbara Schneider,
Hannah Distinguished Professor in the College of Education, was named a
Fulbright New Century Scholar in 2007. Reitu Mabokela, associate
professor of educational administration, was a 2006 scholar.
George Garrity, professor of microbiology and
molecular genetics, and Jack Preiss, University Distinguished
Professor of biochemistry, were elected fellows of the American Association
for the Advancement of Science in 2007.
Elliot Ryser,
associate professor of food science and human nutrition, received the Elmer
Marth Educator Award from the International Association for Food Protection.
Sabrina McCormick,

philosophy, was elected president of the American Society for Bioethics and
Humanities.

Ngonyani, associate
professor of linguistics and languages, was awarded a research fellowship by
the National Endowment for the Humanities and the National Science
Foundation as part of the joint "Documenting Endangered Languages" program.
He will conduct research on Kikisi, a Bantu language spoken by fewer than
10,000 people in four Kisi villages.
Susan Florio-Ruane,
professor of teacher education, was elected president of the National
Conference on Research in Language and Literacy.
Hiram Fitzgerald,
associate provost for University Outreach and Engagement and University
Distinguished Professor of psychology, received the 2006 Dolley Madison
Award for Outstanding Lifelong Contribution to the Development and
Well-being of Very Young Children and Their Families.
A new book by
Guofang Li,
associate professor of second language and literacy education, won the 2006
Edward Fry Book Award of the National Reading Conference.
Robert L. Fiore,
professor emeritus of Spanish, received the “Encomienda con Placa de la
Orden Civil de Alfonso el X el Sabio,” one of Spain’s most prestigious
honors.
Marilyn Frye,
University Distinguished Professor of philosophy and associate dean in the
College of Arts and Letters, was named Phi Beta Kappa’s Romanell Professor
in Philosophy for 2007-08.
Michael VandeHaar,
professor of animal science, will travel to Wageningen University in the
Netherlands as a Fulbright Scholar to foster international collaboration on
dairy nutrient management.
Agricultural research scientists
at MSU are
the fourth most cited authors in the country, according to In-cites, a Web
site on Essential Science Indicators published by Thomson Scientific. MSU
agricultural sciences faculty members published 836 papers in the last 10
years. The papers were cited 5,932 times, for an average of 7.1 citations
per paper.
