IAH 231-B:   Race and Democracy

Richard T. Peterson
Department of Philosophy

What is a race?   And what is the significance of race within American society today?   Some theorists deny that there are such things as races, while others claim that we are experiencing deepening racial division.  One thing is clear: race is a theme that remains an important part of politics and culture.  The aim of this course is to discuss various ways race is defined and represented.  We will be interested both in debates over the reality and meaning of race and in some of the many ways it arises as a theme in different spheres of society and culture.
