Local H - Pack Up The Cats

Rating: 8/10

Why this album never did well, and why this band never made it mainstream, I will never understand. Maybe it's because they are true blue rock. Maybe it's because they actually know to how play their instruments and sing. Maybe it's because their lyrics are filled with substance. Whatever the case may be, Local H are not just another "underground rock band"

All-Right (Oh, Yeah) is the perfect opening song. Not only is it just feel-good-makes-you-want-to-get-up-and-move song but it also has a wonderful music component. Although the lyrics are obviously simple, that is not the substance of the song. Within the first 30 seconds you know that this is going to be a rocker. Scott's vocals perfect match the Local H sound. They are pretty, yet gruff. The music with this song, as with all their others is simple yet complex. It has the perfect fills and frills and solos all at the right time.

Most of their tunes are fast-paced, but there are a few that are slowed-down a bit. In all of them, though, Scott maintains his pretty-gruff voice. He doesn't scream at all, but he doesn't need to. It's not the voice that makes the song, it's the music. Most of the songs are genuine rock because they all have a good beat, without being catchy. You can 'rock out' to them, but not really sing-a-long.

I think that the cat theme is adorable. Kitties are so cute, and with the album title and a song titled "Cha!" Said The Kitty, the meows in Lucky, and the album art, it makes me happy that a band like Local H can appreciate cats and not be into biting the heads off bats or whatever.

Lucky starts off with a slow-tempo, and eventually grows into a louder type feel. Most of their tunes, such as this one, are quite melodic. That would be a good way to describe Scott's voice, as melodic yet gruff. It can be loud and yell at the right time, but it still can be melodic and pretty. Fine And Good is another song that starts off slow, then speeds up. The guitar effects add a little extra something to this song, and this technique can be found in many of their other songs as well.

For anyone who is sick of mainstream, alternative, modern, contemporary rock, Local H is a great band that deserves some respect. It's two members being Scott Lucas and Joe Daniels, both musicians make their sound distinct and beautiful. With Scott's guitar's and vocals along with Joe's drums its all very loud-melodic-rock. Don't think melodic as in slow, pretty, harmonies, it's just what it is, melodic. Listen and find out. Definitely an album for anyone who calls themselves a rocker.
