Superchic[k] are a Christian-based rock group fronted by a pair of sisters on vocals. The rest of the band is talented boys who rock. Unlike what one might assume, God is not mentioned in every song and the listener will not feel as though they are being preached to. Songs are more uplifting in a general sense than they are religious. Especially because of the female singers, the songs are slightly more intended for girls than guys. As seen with their last album, and the hit single "One Girl Revolution," this band wants to raise self-esteem and ensure power into girls everywhere!
The album in its entirety is enjoyable to listen to. Although there is an overall theme, this theme is not repeated into every single song. Also, the religious references are often ambiguous. When "he" is mentioned it may not be clear whether they mean "boyfriend" or "God," which is fine with me.
The one characteristic of this band that I absolutely love is their honesty. For example, the lyrics in "One and Lonely," quickly brought me back sixteen-year-old memories of acne and hopelessness. For example, "not that I think I'm ugly, but acne throws me for a backslide, I don't want to go outside, makeup can't hide how I feel inside." When will Linkin Park start paining away about how they were dumped due their oily faces? The song "Rock Stars" sends the positive message that you don't have to be a rock star to be great. This theme is also repeated in the song "Hero" with the message "Heroes are made when you make a choice."
Like others, I can only take so much sugar positiveness. Happiness in rock music, however, is quite rare and I'll take advantage of any that I can find. One problem I've found with the modern Christian rock, is that although God may not be mentioned in every song the idea of 'everything will be alright' is mentioned repeatedly. Granted, this is a wonderful theory, the sweetness of this prospect makes my teeth hurt.
If one is looking for smokin' guitars and pure singing, look some place else. These kids are talented, I'm not saying they suck, but I would rate their talent level to the likes of Sum 41. There is meaning there, and there are numerous good statements made, but the catchiness is a tad overwhelming.
I highly recommend this album, and their previous debut, to any teenage girl, or Christian male. In fact, the latter recommended this band to me, so this definitely is not a girl's only band! There are some favorites, but every song is listenable. Guaranteed to make you happy, empowered, and invigorated.
