Pull Me Up.. Drag Me Down - Silverjet

Rating: 5/10
All Music Guide says:
  • The group has good ideas, but they don't know how to execute them
  • a sporadically enjoyable collection of grungy alternative pop

nosmiles agrees: The first few songs are heavy, fun, and catchy. After that, it become dull and boring. Granted, that may be a tad harsh, the rest of the songs are definitely redundant.

The vocals are scratchy but work well. Musically, the guitars are nice and distinct, and everything sounds fine. It's not the sound, but the repetition that becomes disastrous for the band.

I have a feeling they were striving for catchiness. The choruses in most of the songs succeed in this, but it doesn't save them. I've always liked this album, however, I realized that it is because I had never listened to the entire thing at once. When individually listened, the songs are quite good, it's when played as a whole that they become too similar to each other.

One of the most unfortunate drawbacks of the music is the lyrics. The lyrics drive the music. Every guitar part, etc is centered around the lyrical structure. This is emphasized by the few harmonies, and the fact that almost every song has a 17 second musical intro, then immediate jumps into words. The lyrics are also cliche. They're either about love, or what the band dislikes about the world. They are quite straightforwardness, instead of being abstract and poetic.

For a bargain-bin cd, I don't regret spending that $1.07. It's not worth much more than that though.
