Rating: 8/10
This album consists of very-well produced Less Than Jake tunes. What makes this album stand out over their others, is definitely the lyrics. They are more about life, and less immature. Due to the well-produced sound, the music is better too - more diversity. Equal amounts of rock & ska, but the songs without horns are more complicated. There's plenty of catchy riffs and cute solos.
It could be said that the theme of this album is growing up. One could say that this is actually the theme for the band, but although the song topics aren't original, it is a more realistic topic than Metal-heads singing about broken hearts. Even when LTJ does stumble upon the talk of love, it is in a very cute and well-written way, for example "Great American Sharpshooter." The song has wonderful background vocals. Also, a few of the songs have little pre-recorded things in the beginning.
Less Than Jake really concentrated on this album and it was worth the
effort. The band gained a new trombone player during the making of this
album and the horn section sounds as strong as ever. There are many repeated vocal techniques and guitar playing styles, and this repetition is a good thing. Overall, this album was very
well put together, produced, and written. For a very well
produced album, I think Less Than Jake did their best to keep it
sounding real.
