This album was best selling Green Day album to this date, though I don't know why. Maybe because of the catchy lyrics, like in "Basket Case", or maybe it was the nice tune in "When I Come Around".
Both songs, and several others, are radio-friendly. You can
sing-along and relate to them. That's what the public wants to
hear. Billie Joe Armstrong's voice definitely identifies every song. He
distinguishes the Green Day sound. Whether he's singing slow
& soft, or loud & screaming, it still sounds great.
Dookie is just good ole punk. Even though the beginning of
"F.O.D." is a bit acoustic, it does break into the rock
part in the middle. The music of this album is kind of subtle.
Not every song is loud and punkish, like "Pulling Teeth".
Just by looking at the lyrics you can see that the band's
maturity level isn't very high. Considering the name of the album
is Dookie. The lyrics are rather negative, and sometimes morbid.
There are no real serious or even slow songs on this album. The songs are very creative and original. "Basket Case"
easily became a hit mainly because of the first, identifiable
lyric, "Do you have the time to listen to me whine?"
Overall, the album wasn't bad. Some slow tunes here and there,
but the rockin' songs made up for it. The cover art, and the art
inside the booklet is very creative and interesting. You should
definitely try to read everything you can, on every picture. If
you are a fan of punk-rock and Green Day, then this is the album
for you.
