...And Out Come The Wolves - Rancid
Rating: 7.5/10

Pop the cd into your cd player , listen to the first song, and be totally prepared for more! "Maxwell Murder" is the best intro song. With the mysterious beginning from the movie Gringo, to the most amazing bass solo, to Tim Armstrong's throaty vocals. This is just the beginning to a great album. Compared to Let's Go, this album is a little bit underlying depressing, but that doesn't really change the sound much.

The music is unbelievable. Hard power chords, soft ska-style guitar, great bass and guitar riffs and solos. It's all blended so well. "Journey To The End Of The East Bay" has a wonderful bass intro. Rancid's sound is so strong and individual-like. Rancid takes many sort-of different styles and turns them into their own style.

The lyrics are very serious and saddening if you read a lot into them. "Journey To The End Of The East Bay" is my favorite for this. If you know Rancid then you know that Tim Armstrong (Lint) and Matt Freeman (Matt McCall) were previously in the band Operation Ivy, which this song is about."Lock, Step, and Gone" describes a bad neighborhood that Tim lived in and "Olympia, WA" shows how un-fun NYC can be. Most of the songs have little messages and describe life. Most of Tim's lyrics are more direct. You don't really have to read and analyze the lyrics to try and figure out what a song is about.

Great sound, lyrics and togetherness. Not too much overproduced or under produced. Just enough to give it a tight, realistic sound. Some songs are instant-gratification, others grow on you.
