Andrew Jackson Downing was an architect during the 19th Century, (1815-1852.
He started out a gardener and soon began designing his own versions of the
residencial home, a rendition of the rather inexpensive detached home. He
was able to gain international popularity and his works were studied by architects
all over the globe. Downing believd that the home should be a representation of
the landscape surrounding it. Downing believed that the residencial house
should blend with its natural habitats. The styles chosen were based on the location,
for example, in the wilderness the house should be of materials that were available and
matching with its landscape. He did not believe that a white house should be present in the
middle of a forest. Being a landscape gardener he also desiged the layout of the estate
all complementing each other. Some of his styles were:
- 1)A suburban cottage
- 2)An irregular villa in the Italian Style
- 3)An irregular cottage in the English Style
- 4)A cottage in the Tuscan Style
- 5)A villa in the Gothic Style
- 6)A villa in the Elizabethian Style
- 7)A cottage in the Rhine Style
- 8)AND MANY MORE!!!!!!!
