President's Welcome

Welcome to the MSU chapter of Mortar Board Senior Honor Society!

Mortar Board is a National Honor Society that recognizes college seniors for distinguished ability and achievement in scholarship, leadership, and service. The MSU chapter, known as the Sphinx chapter, is one of 200 Mortar Board groups established at different colleges and universities throughout the United States. Our goals are to make a difference in our community and campus through active community service and fundraising for charitable causes.

During the fall of 2007, the members of Mortar Board at MSU have participated in several community services events! Some members helped create a fun and safe Halloween for local children at the “Boo at the Zoo,” event held at Potter Park Zoo. Other members made specialized cards for children through the “Hugs and Hope” program supporting children with chronic ailments and volunteered making dinner at the local Ronald McDonald House. Also, this year the Mortar Board book drive brought in more than 1,100 books! These were donated to Better World Books and the Student Michigan Education Association Outreach to Teach program.

This spring Mortar Board is looking forward to many more exciting community service activities. Members will be participating in the “Into the Streets” day of community service in January, as well as Relay for Life later in the spring. We look forward to continuing fundraising and service activities as the year progresses!

If you are interested in joining our group, feel free to email any questions to mortarbd@msu.edu. An application can be found on our website as well- applications for the 2008-2009 school year are due by 5 pm on Thursday, February 7, 2008.

We’re carrying on the tradition of another great year of service!
