African-American Poets of the Last Century |
| Grade Level: 10th, 11th, 12th grades |
|
GOALS
|
| 1. To familiarize and expose students to a wide variety of 20th century African-American poets. |
| 2. Toexpose students to poetry done through different mediums, including music, rap, spoken word, blues, and film. |
| 3. To begin to develop an appreciation for poetry, its oral traditions, and the near limitlessness of the genre. |
| 4. To understand the importance of the poetry genre within the African American community, modern society, social activism, and the students' own lives. |
| 5. To develop and diversify strategies for reading and responding to poetry, thus increasing their comprehension and interpretation skills. |
| 6. To synthesize ideas through multiple texts which represent the perspective of those who are in a minority group, and apply the principles and generalizations in the texts to investigate societal issues and problems from a different viewpoint. |

7. To develop oral speaking,
reading skills, and presentation skills in both whole-group and small-group
settings.
