Issues for Graduate Students

red dot DAC – Printer problems

People printing things not related to the courses they teach

Printer/copier only to be used for TA work

Don’t take paper from the copy room to use in CELSR

Also cut down on last minute copying due to crowding at those times

            Suggested solutions

                        Allotment of copies

Clarification and control through ID, number, etc.

                                    As other departments do

red dot Printer etiquette in CELSR

If we use too much toner, we will lose the printer

            Bring your own paper

Don’t print materials for TA courses in CELSR

Don’t print entire dissertations or other large printing runs

red dot Watch out for people who are not LIN grad students in CELSR

            Don’t prop door open

Put up sign on door – CELSR is not an open computer lab for anyone

red dot General warning about leaving rooms unlocked

            Theft happens

If you’re the last one, make sure the door locks behind you

red dot Student crowds in offices

Reserve another room ahead of time if possible

            Access to 607?

Need clarification on if we can use this room for groups of students

red dot Website

            Make more use of it

Make suggestions on how to make it more useful

Submit information on reading groups, etc. to the webmaster

Student-faculty liaison being excluded from faculty meetings this past year

For colloquium – each faculty member responsible for one per year

Evaluations

Funding based on them?  This needs clarification

Evaluations are not informative or useful

No clarifications on ratings or funding

                        Need criteria for ratings

Changes in policies and how they effect us

We have no feedback/responses to these

Supervisor evaluations of TA forms

Many people have not seen their evaluation forms

Program requirements

            Language requirement, particularly non-Indo-European

How languages fit in individual students’ programs

More flexibility for the committees to determine

Field methods course and/or typology course

Scheduling and having to wait for courses

Staggering courses rather than having all Theory I courses in the spring

            Restructuring for better use

                        Morphology, historical

Clarify what these courses need to be and what they fulfill

Compare to similar programs at other universities

            Mathematical methods course

Experimental design – part of methods course?

Equipment

            Access to the eye tracker

            EEG – work with SLS?

Email and communication

Have a time limit and it needs to be enforced

Faculty need to respond to mails in a timely manner

 Faculty advocating for student funding

            Also better communication regarding funding

 Hierarchy of funding

Teaching assignments and people getting positions

Relying on word of mouth for crucial information

Travel funding

            Clarifications

            Fairness

            Distribution

All forms needed by grad students should be available on LSO website

            Travel funding, applications, etc.

Faculty availability

            Appointments

            Email

Office hours getting filled too quickly

Students having a difficult time meeting with faculty
