The 1999 NASCAR Winston Cup Awards Banquet was held at the Waldorf - Astoria Hotel on December 3, 1999.
Here's what 9th place driver WARD BURTON had to say:
Well thanks a lot Rick. I know I speak for all the drivers and teams when I thank Winston for the support they give us for each and every season. I'm proud to be here representing the Caterpillar # 22 team tonight. All season I felt like the Bill Davis Pontiac has had the potential to be in the top ten this year, even though we were a single car team. It’s great to see the results of the team’s hard work.
At the end of every season there are always a lot of people to thank. And that’s even truer at the end of a season like we’ve had. The first people I need to thank are Bill and Gail Davis. Since 1995, we’ve been through so much together as part of Winston Cup racing. And the loyalty that we have shown each other is paying off tonight. And Tommy Baldwin, I can’t thank you enough. You’re not only my crew chief, but you’re my friend. You’ve brought such organization and enthusiasm to our team. We appreciate the support you and the members of the chassis and the fab shop bring to us. I’d also like to thank my pit crew; I’d put you guys up against anybody, any day. And to Terry Ellege, the motor room crew, you really gave the CAT car amazing horsepower and reliability. We couldn’t be here tonight if it weren’t for you and everyone at the engine department. And to Mike Brown at Team Manager. You are our backbone. We work together better because of your leadership. I couldn’t talk about everyone who’s important to CAT car without thinking of all of their families, too, and their members. Their support makes it possible to do what we do.
And now a few words about our sponsors. Some of the most successful names in the business, including Caterpillar, Siemens, Amoco, MBNA, Pontiac, Goodyear, and Mountain Dew. I’d like to single out a few of the major sponsors. Thanks to Greg Tolls and the great people at Caterpillar. Your support has been amazing. You and your dealers and customers have taken the time to build a partnership both on and off the track. We started our relationship in 1995 when I drove your Busch car. And I knew then that it was a special relationship. Tonight, I feel lucky to represent you and to be part of Caterpillar team. A special mention to MBNA. I really appreciate them not only being one of close friends, but being supporters of the 22 team and my wildlife foundation. The last sponsor I need to thank is Siemens. Siemens has given us an awful lot of support for the 22 car and the 02 Busch Grand National team. A very special thanks to our racing family – Bill France, NASCAR, and R.J. Reynolds. I’m honored to be involved in your great sport.
Most of all I want to thank the great NASCAR fans. Your loyalty means a lot to all of us. As the year went on, it was awesome to see more and more people wearing the CAT colors. It’s been your enthusiasm that made NASCAR what it is today. And it’s your loyalty that allows me to do what I love to do.
Mom, Dad, Bryan, without you, Jeff and I wouldn’t be successful in racing or life. I know we gave you some anxious moments at places like, Vegas, Darlington, and Rockingham. Heh heh. [Laughter]
I finally want to recognize my family, especially my wife, Tabitha. Our anniversary’s coming up and I’ve always been able to count on her love and support. And to my kids, Sarah and Jeb, both of you are the pride of my life. You sacrifice a lot with your Daddy being gone. I love you very much. Thanks again and Happy Holidays.
