"When I was in high school, first coming out, I dealt with the unfortunate harassment of my peers. After a particularly difficult experience, I sought guidance from one of my teachers. She sat with me and shared with me a life changing moment. She said, ‘Whether you are gay does not matter. This is a place where you learn, and learning should always be safe.’"
Michigan State holds a special place in my heart, in part because of family tradition. When I walk across campus and hear the band practice, my mind races back to my childhood. Suddenly, I'm reliving football games with my family, feeding the ducks, and being amazed by the sheer beauty of our campus." Brandon Brown is a Staffing Coordinator with Kelly Services, Inc. He earned his BA in Communication from Michigan State University in 2004. He currently resides in Farmington Hills, Michigan. |

"I look back upon my years at Michigan State as perhaps the best of my life, because of the
friends I made, the new-found freedom I explored, and the opportunities I had to learn and grow --
both academically and personally. I love the institution for all that it has meant in my life and
want it to see it grow and play a similar role in the lives of others. I believe the formation of a
GLBT alumni association at Michigan State will strengthen the university by fostering closer relationships
between the University and its GLBT alumni and by supporting a positive environment for MSU’s
GLBT students, faculty and staff."
He was a member of the steering committee that recommended the creation of a GLBT alumni association at Michigan State, and served as the association’s inaugural president. Before his participation in those efforts, Brian was significantly involved in volunteer efforts to enhance the lives of GLBT people in Michigan. He served as board member and then the longest serving president of Affirmations Community Center in Detroit and has been a member of the Executive and Legal Committees of the Michigan Campaign for Human Dignity, the Grants Committee of Steppin’ Out, the Development Committee of the HOPE Fund of the Community Foundation of Southeast Michigan, and the Special Allocations Committee of United Way Community Services of Southeast Michigan. While at Michigan State, Brian was involved in Towerguard, served as Assistant Business Manager (1978-’79) and then Business Manager (1979 – 80) of the Red Cedar Log yearbook, and was an economics teaching assistant (1980 – 81). "I think the MSU GLBT association is incredibly important, because it gives our community a positive visibility, allows us to participate in our university’s on-going life, including curriculum, scholarships, and social events, and it makes it possible for us to give back to the university for its extraordinary influence on our lives."

"As an alumnus and donor, I believe in MSU and its land grant mission. MSU has made great strides in becoming a more welcoming place for GLBT students, faculty, and staff, and now it needs to make its GLBT alumni aware that we are also important members of the MSU community. Through traditional and innovative alumni activities, and promotion of things like The Pride Scholarship, the new GLBT Alumni organization will help extend that message."
He formerly served on the boards of MSU Gay and Lesbian Faculty and Staff Association, Lansing Association for Human Rights, Michigan Organization for Human Rights, and the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force. In 1985, John earned his B.A. – Telecommunication from Michigan State University. He earned his MPA – Nonprofit Administration from Grand Valley State University in 2006. He currently resides in Grand Rapids, Michigan, with his partner, John Legge. |

"Michigan State University gave me the ability to learn how to learn. As an African-American student from Detroit, I was in the distinct minority. By the time I arrived, MSU understood that Black students had different challenges in becoming a successful student. Support mechanisms were created, Black Aides in residence halls, the Office of Supportive Services for minority students, and African-American history and literature courses allowed me feel accepted and validated at MSU. However, there was nothing during 1971-1975 at MSU to help me understand, discuss, and learn about my sexual orientation. The only recourse was the Counseling Center—where homosexuality was officially considered a mental illness. The options for meeting other gay students in affirming circumstances were nil. I am so grateful that today's GLBT students experience a very different MSU, an MSU where the administration acknowledges their existence, and an MSU where they can meet other GLBT students in healthy and affirming situations. As a member of the MSU GLBT Alumni I want to ensure support of GLBT students and help the university to know that we have always been a part of the MSU family. I am proud to present my total self to Michigan State University at last."
He presently works with the Kimberly-Clark Company as its Diversity and Inclusion Director. Ronald has been involved in various Metro Atlanta organizations, including the Board of Directors of the DeKalb Chamber of Commerce, Atlanta Chamber of Commerce, Southwest Medical Center, Metro Atlanta YMCA, Junior Achievement of Atlanta, and Project Open Hand (serving meals to people living with HIV / critical illnesses). He served as president of the Atlanta Executive Network, a business networking organization from June 2000 to January 2002. Ronald is an active member of St. Mark United Methodist Church, in midtown Atlanta. A native of Detroit, Michigan, Ronald received a B.A. - Communications, an M.A. - Counseling, and an M.A. - Labor and Industrial Relations—all from Michigan State University. "Michigan State University has always been to me a place where I became aware of who I am and what I want to do in the world; for that reason I feel a deep connection to it. I learned socially and emotionally as well as intellectually during my time there. And while a resident of Lansing for many years, the school provided not only a source of book learning through classes, but a place to attend concerts, lectures, art festivals, sports events, and weddings in the chapel. It has one of the greenest campuses in the country, and I still recall with pleasure the many walks, bike rides, and picnics I had there with family and friends. In short, MSU is a familiar home, one that I visit often when in Lansing.
Claudia Skutar graduated from MSU with a B.A. in English in 1979 and an M.A. in English in 2000. She’s currently finishing her doctorate in English at the University of Cincinnati, where she serves as an assistant professor at the university’s Raymond Walters College. |
