Welcome Prospective Students!

A Message from the Graduate Director

Thank you for your interest in graduate study in our department. Applications and information regarding resources for graduate students at the University can be found at http://www.admis.msu.edu/

A list of our faculty can be found from our faculty page: Faculty Directory

Please read Frequently Asked Questions and Guidelines for Admission before emailing any questions.

We have a strong program of graduate study in Economics. In a 1995 report by the National Research Council, the effectiveness of our doctoral program was ranked 25th out of 107 doctoral programs in the United States. We offer coursework and training across the full gamut of theoretical and empirical economics and econometrics, from numerous nationally and internationally recognized researchers. Our graduates have been successfully placed at research universities in the U.S. and elsewhere, as well as in government and the private sector.

Review of applications for admission to the doctoral program each fall begins the previous January and is generally completed by April. IT IS UNLIKELY THAT WE WILL BE ABLE TO ADMIT APPLICANTS WHOSE APPLICATION MATERIALS ARE NOT RECEIVED BY JANUARY 15TH.

Complete applications for the graduate program must be in our files before January 15th to receive full consideration for financial support. International students can enhance the likelihood of being awarded an assistantship by providing credible evidence of fluency in spoken English. Your test score from the Test of Spoken English (administered by the Educational Testing Service) will be considered sufficient demonstration of spoken English. We use the same basic information to evaluate applications for assistantships as we use to evaluate applications for admission. In particular, we consider your academic record, scores on the Graduate Record Examination (GRE), and letters of recommendation. You should have all application materials sent to:
