"Pappy"
O'Buell
To a great extent, the early history of
the chapter is the story of Donald O'Buell. "Pappy" as he was
affectionately known by all DUs through his unfailing service and wise
advice, made the chapter possible. In fact, the down payment on the original
house was a loan from him. Professor Buell received Michigan State University's
Distinguished Teacher Award for the 1957-1958 academic year. Professor
Buell was a fan of the arts, and encouraged the chapter to expand its
focus into the true goal of Delta Upsilon; building Renaissance men. He
remained in close contact with the chapter and aided the men whenever
possible. All DUs were saddened by his sudden death in 1960 as a result
of a heart attack.
