Chapter House
^427 MAC, Current Chapter House Location

The founding of Delta Upsilon at Michigan State University took place in 1946. Our colony was given the name Delta Rho and organized by three DUs from other universities. The Delta Rho colony grew and prospered under the guiding hand of its advisor, Professor Donald O'Buell. Its petition for admission was accepted at the International Convention of Delta Upsilon in 1948. The colony consisted of 36 men headed by president Al McGovern. It was officially installed on January 15, 1949.

The chapter was exceptionally strong during the 1950s and 1960s, with active membership consistently being over 80 members. The chapter helped many brothers during this period in successfully running for university class presidencies. The DUs had more than their share inducted into Ex Calibre and other honoraries. Trophies were prevalent due to the successful participation in campus and Greek events.

The late 1960s and early 1970s saw the fraternity world experience a rapid decline. Much of that decline was attributed to the turbulant years of the Vietnam era. There existed at this time a general lack of interest in anything resembling organization and structure. Unfortunately, the strong Delta Rho Chapter of the 50s and 60s fell victim to this period. The chapter was closed in 1971 along with many other fraternities across the country. The chapter house was sold to a group of local businessmen and converted to a professional office building. In the summer of 1999, the Grand River chapter house was demolished for the construction of new office space.

In 1976 with the help of the International Fraternity and dedicated alumni, the revival of the MSU Delta Upsilon organization was successful. The Alpha Delta Upsilon colony was located at the original chapter location at 334 Evergreen. With the help of the extremely active alumni chapter during the 1970s, the colony grew on the MSU campus. Delta Upsilon was reinstated at Michigan State University on November16-17, 1979. Because of consistent growth, our present house at 427 MAC Ave. was purchased. The brothers of Delta Upsilon have lived there since. Over the course of the summers of 1999 and 2000, the Alumni Chapter has undertaken renovations and remodeling of the chapter house, greatly improving the comfort and living environment.
