The Carillon Practice Klavier (Keyboard)
the practice klavier
Located on the ground floor of Beaumont Tower, the Practice Klavier is actually a MIDI synthesizer. When a baton is struck it in turn strikes a small piezo-electric switch which alerts the MIDI computer to play the associated sound sample at a volume proportional to the force of the blow. The foot pedals mirror the bottom two-thirds of the keyboard permitting the performer to strike twice as many notes at the same time.

The amplifier & synthesizer are below the row of batons, in the center; the speakers are located to the left and right sides of the panel.

Having this keyboard permits students to learn new pieces without making their "mistakes" in a broadly public manner. However, since the practice klavier uses springs to restore the batons to their rest position while the performance klavier uses gravity, there is still additional experience to be acquired once the performer goes public with their playing.
