John Courter

     Lansing native John Courter is a Professor of Music at Berea College, Berea Kentucky, where a carillon has just been installed.

     He holds degrees in Choral Music from Michigan State University and from the the University of Michigan. He also has earned diplomas from the Netherlands Carillon School in Amersfoort. While at MSU he was a student of Wendell Westcott.

     He has composed many fine works for the carillon. His Rilke Fantasy was inspired by a writing by the German poet Rainer Maria Rilke (1875-1926). Various elements of the poen are reflected in the music. Also, there is use of Gregorian chant: Vicitmae paschale laudes and Te Deum laudamus.

     John Courter has composed a memorial piece honoring the victims of the September 11, 2001 attacks. The score (in .PDF format) may be downloaded from our [Publications] page.
