Current officers:
All performers, composers, educators, and music supporters are invited to participate in the Alliance of Michigan State University Composers. AMSUC is a student organization dedicated to supporting the activities of MSU composers and encouraging collaboration with performers in the creation and performance of new music, while providing an opportunity for the community to familiarize itself with the techniques and concepts developed in the 20th and 21st centuries. The Alliance was conceived in 1997, and has organized fall, spring, and summer concerts. In 1999, the group produced a professional recording, "Riot: a Compositional Device", which was distributed to over 100 colleges and universities across the United States. In the spring of 2000, several MSU composers and cellists traveled to Huntington College to participate in workshops and masterclasses with Madeline Shapiro, avant-garde cellist and founder of New York's Modernworks! ensemble. In the fall of 2001, AMSUC officers met to re-examine the mission of the organization and to seek a new vision for the role of modern music at MSU and the interaction between performers and composers. New activities and directions that have emerged from these meetings include the planned production of a new CD, sponsorship of off-campus concerts, the creation of innovative concert formats, sponsorship of workshops for performers and composers, encouraging the collaboration between performers and composers as well as between music and other disciplines, and establishing a dialogue on musical issues and new music. |
