The Black Scholar and the State of the Black World

March 27 - 29, 2008

Kellogg Hotel and Conference Center, East Lansing, MI

Submission Deadline: January 25th, 2008

Sankofa, the graduate student association for the African American and African Studies Program at Michigan State University, is calling all graduate students to participate in a discussion on issues confronting the State of the Black World.  While this conference is geared towards graduate scholars, we strongly encourage the participation of professionals, undergraduate students and community leaders.

The Black Scholar and the State of the Black World Conference will:

  • Confront current issues with regards to methodology and best practices in African American and African Studies;
  • Create a forum for dialogue on Black Studies programs and the future of the discipline;
  • Explore the issue of Black studies’ commitment to the African American community as espoused in the original vision of Black Studies.

Proposal topics from a broad range of themes will be considered, but we are particularly interested in papers from interdisciplinary perspectives that reflect one or more of the following sub themes:

  • Arts and Culture
  • HIV/AIDS in the 21st Century
  • Reparations Movement (Domestic and International)
  • State of Black Women in Black Studies
  • State of Black Youth throughout the Diaspora

The conference committee invites all those interested to submit 250-300 word abstracts for individual paper presentations or complete panel proposals. We also welcome submissions of film projects and performances. Please include a biography of no more than 100 words, along with your contact information. Abstracts must be submitted no later than January 25th 2008. Submissions may be sent electronically to LaToya Brackett at msusankofa@gmail.com (subject heading of: Abstract Submission) or via mail to:
