SUNDAY SERVICES
Worship is the ritual response to life; a way of centering and
empowering ourselves in community in order to sustain and transform the world. The sermon
is often, but not always, the central act of worship in Unitarian Universalist churches.
At the UU Church of Greater Lansing, we also value greatly our high quality music. Worship
is generally predictable and lasts an hour. This predictability provides solace and
comfort in a hurting world, so that we can better hear and respond to the call for social
justice. Elements of

VESPERS
What is Vespers?
The word vespers simply refers to worship held in the evening hours. Our Wednesday vespers
is very much the same each week, and not as long or as thematic as a Sunday morning
worship experience. It might seem a little strange to be used to worshipping with
more than a 100 people at either service on Sunday morning, and come on a Wednesday
evening to find yourself sitting and singing alone with the Minister or the Director of
Music. Yet, I hope the intimacy is a welcome experience for those who have tried it. I
enjoy meeting you one-on-one and struggling to lead hymns without accompaniment. It is a
spiritual practice to try to stay in tune, and not judge my own voice when I so easily
fall out of tune. I invite you into a quiet half hour on a Wednesday evening before your
meetings and business, or after classes or work, or before walking the dog and running
your errands. Its a chance, mid-week, to take a deep breath and focus. I hope
to see you there.
