2001 Thoughts

Alright. I was out-of-state camping (read: no radio for Indians games) on Friday and Saturday night. I'm driving back Sunday listening to the game and all of a sudden I am aware that the Seattle fans are booing Omar for the first time that I can recall. Of course, I later come to find out that there was an incident involving Omar requesting that the Seattle pitcher remove his (very large) diamond earrings which were allegedly causing a glare. Now I must admit that I did not witness the above
incident. However, I have three things to say. (1) Pitchers are regulated on a number of aspects of their attire to ensure that batters are not distracted, including the color of their mitts and undershirts. Good diamonds, and I'm sure Rhodes can afford the very best, are designed to catch the light and sparkle. Those were certainly big enough to cause a distraction, and I understand there was a lot of sunglare at that time of the game. (2) Rhodes' comments on the incident ran along the lines of calling Omar a "little midget." In my experience, when people know they have no good argument, they resort to name calling. (Case in point: I've already had one Jim Rome "clone"--who couldn't even spell--call me names for being a fan of Omar's.) (3) The Mariners have enough talent to beat the Indians fair and square. They don't need the benefit of Rhodes' jewelry to do it.7/29/01
Yikes! I can't believe it's been a whole year since I updated my "thoughts." I wonder if that has anything to do with the fact that it has been just over a year since I started working full time, and almost a year since I bought a house...
Omar has seemed to swing back toward an offensive year that is more typical for him. Some people are extraordinarily concerned that he has not been hitting well--to those folks, I remind you that Omar was not brought to this team for his offensive capabilities. So lets just relax and enjoy his always-stellar defense. (I do wonder, however, why Omar hasn't been dropped back to batting 9th as he should be.)
