I am Professor
in the Department of Philosophy and the Center for Ethics and Humanities
in the Life Sciences, where I serve as Director. I have taught
health care ethics to medical, nursing, and veterinary students
since 1981. In addition, I teach graduate courses in the Department
of Philosophy, and the Interdisciplinary Programs in Health and
Humanities, where I served as Director from 1994-2000. I received
my Ph.D. in Philosophy from MSU in 1980.
In
addition to my teaching responsibilities, I regularly speak to professional
and public audiences on a variety of topics, including informed
consent, advance directives, assisted suicide and euthanasia, and
others.
I
also provide consultation to Michigan hospitals and health professionals.
I serve on the Ethics Committee of Ingham Regional Medical Center
in Lansing, and was co-chair of the Biomedical Ethics Committee
at Sinai Hospital of Detroit, 1990-1999
My
current research projects include include a book entitled Rules,
Cases and Judgments: Critical Perspectives on Method in Medical
Ethics. Other research interests concern family perceptions
of PVS patients, and the proper role of "blame" and related concepts
in campaigns to improve patient safety.
