I am Professor in the Department of Philosophy and the Center for Ethics and Humanities in the Life Sciences, where I serve as Director. I have  taught health care ethics to medical, nursing, and veterinary students since 1981. In addition, I teach graduate courses in the Department of Philosophy, and the Interdisciplinary Programs in Health and Humanities, where I served as Director from 1994-2000. I received my Ph.D. in Philosophy from MSU in 1980.

In addition to my teaching responsibilities, I regularly speak to professional and public audiences on a variety of topics, including informed consent, advance directives, assisted suicide and euthanasia, and others.

I  also provide consultation to Michigan hospitals and health professionals. I serve on the Ethics Committee of Ingham Regional Medical Center in Lansing, and was co-chair of the Biomedical Ethics Committee at Sinai Hospital of Detroit, 1990-1999

My current research projects include include a book entitled Rules, Cases and Judgments: Critical Perspectives on Method in Medical Ethics. Other research interests concern family perceptions of PVS patients, and the proper role of "blame" and related concepts in campaigns to improve patient safety.
