Avalon Hill Chancellorsville variants:

A. Four Roads to Richmond

B. Campaign Fredericksburg

A. Four Roads to Richmond

The CHANCELLORSVILLE game box announces that the map depicts the area of FOUR famous civil war battles, but only one is covered by the game.

In their Mar/April 1976 issue of The General magazine Avalon Hill rectified this omission with an article that covers all four battles in scenario form - Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, The Wilderness, and Spottslyvania.

The original article included a set of counters; for economy's sake, several counters were used in different scenarios, and it was necessary to use some of the game's original counters for other battles. The set presented here has enough counters to make separate sets for all four scenarios (except that you will still need the game's counters for the Chancellorsville scenario). There is also an Order of Battle chart for the Wilderness/Spottsylvania scenarios.

This is a photocopy of the twelve-page article, and a new computer generated set of color counters - you will need to mount the counters onto posterboard and cut the counters out. I have maintained the basic symbology scheme of the original game, with some modifications.

At left is a section of the map with some of the units positioned around the Courthouse at Spottsylvania. The article adds a few rules changes, such as new leadership capabilities.

If you've become bored by the standard version of this classic, then try this set of new scenarios. It costs $5.00 which includes shipping in the US.

B. Campaign Fredericksburg

This was a variant published by Avalon Hill in their Jan/Feb 1977 issue of The General magazine. Instead of a short scenario, it covers the whole campaign from November to January. The article gives you the orders of appearance and battle, but did not provide any new counters! Well, here are some.

This is a photocopy of the four-page article, and a new computer generated set of color counters. I have maintained the symbology scheme of the original game - you will need to mount and cut the counters out. Note that I include the optional artillery units mentioned in the article, as well as a new turn record table.

So if your old game is gathering dust in your closet, bring out the old classic and try this variant. It costs $3.00 which includes shipping in the US.

At left is a closeup of the portion of the mapboard around Fredericksburg, with these counters portraying units taking up positions around the town.

The article adds some new rules regarding the allocation of artillery factors, as well as strategic movement. The game proceeds in day-long turns until batle occurs, then turns represent 3hrs.
