Viola’s Sense of Community

Greetings residents of Viola! Thank you for participating in our survey a few months ago. The purpose of the survey was to see how strong of a "sense of community" exists on your block. There was a 62% response rate. 

Here’s what some of the residents said...




 

Belonging and Connection

Many of the residents we surveyed said that they felt connected to each other and that they felt they belonged on Viola. Here are some results:

  • Residents on the block know each other (69% agree).
  • People who live on the block think of themselves as a community (62% agree).
  • People talk to each other about community problems (62% agree).
  • People on the block feel they belong there (75% agree).
  • Residents care about the block’s future (69% agree).

Participation and Recycling on Viola

The majority of you (62%) agreed that People on this block do things together to improve the block. In addition, 54% said that people on Viola participate in community improvement activities such as flower plantings and 54% said that residents participate in social activities such as pot lucks. Additionally, 75% of you indicated that people on this block participate in the curbside recycling program. Congratulations!
 
 

Vioal is Quiet, Safe.

When asked the questions, "What is the best thing about living on this block?," and "What is it that you feel contributes most to your sense of community on your block?," several of you indicated that Viola is a quiet, safe place to live. Many of you noted, specifically, that the neighborhood watch group was valuable. Another area mentioned was that Viola is in a nice, convenient location.
 

Overall Sense of Community

The overall sense of community on Viola generally appaers to be positive. For example, 58% of you told us that the overall sense of community on Viola is "just about right." However, one-third said that the sense of community is "too little." Residents told us that getting more involved would help to increase it. Just over half (54%) indicated that they either liked or loved living on Viola. A fairly high number (69%) said that they would be willing to work with their neighbors to improve conditions on the block. An overwhelmingly high number (92%) said that they would be willing to assume a leadership role on the block. This is a very positive response!
