News on New York!

Hello and thank you to all of you who participated in our survey a few months ago! Sixteen households took part in this survey, and the results are in. Here’s what you said about living on New York...

New York is home!

The majority of you told us that the best things about living here are the quiet neighborhood and the secure feeling of knowing your neighbors for so long. Many of you indicated that your children have grown up here, and this makes New York "home."

Connection

The most exciting feature of this block is that you are connected! Sixty percent (60%) of you stated that people on this block know each other, and nearly half reported that people on this block socialize with each other. Over half of you (54%) said that people on this block each other, and 73% agreed that people on this block watch out for each other. These are great characteristics for neighbors to have! In fact, nearly half of you said that your sense of community on this block is "just about right."

Safety

We were happy to find that 94% of you feel there is less crime on New York street than other blocks in Lansing. You also told us that there is very little crime, with the only mentioned concern regarding speeding cars endangering small children. Amazingly, a huge majority of you (80%) said that people on this block feel it is safe to walk on New York at night. Another plus is that 67% of you reported that someone in your household is at home during the day. Those of you that are home at this time have the important responsibility of watching out for each other.

Working Together

An overwhelming 87% of you are either somewhat or very interested in working with your neighbors to improve conditions on your block. And, 37% of you expressed interest in assuming a leadership role on the block! With this level of interest, any of you who would like to start a project should be able to find lots of help! Some of the ideas you suggested include:

Overall

The main point that we’d like to leave you with is that New York is a GREAT block where people like and watch out for each other. There are some concerns, but there is also a high level of interest in improving conditions on this block!
