Luwanna News!!

Hello and THANK YOU to all of you who participated in our survey in September and October! We are happy to be bringing you the results of your interviews. Fifteen households participated in the survey, and here’s what your said about living on Luwanna....

LUWANNA IS HOME

A huge majority (93%) of you like or love living on Luwanna; none of you dislike it. All of you reported talking to your neighbors - - about half of you said "sometimes" and the other half said "fairly often." Over half of you said that people on the block get together (usually at a neighbor’s house) to socialize.

Another amazing quality of Luwanna is how helpful you are to each other. Over half of you reported doing something the last month,, without compensation, to help a neighbor!

HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!

1996

CONNECTION

The most STRIKING thing about this block is the high level of CONNECTION you seem to have with each other. Over two thirds of your stated that people on this block like each other (80%), that people know each other (67%), and that people trust each other (67%)!! You also agreed that people on this block watch out for each other (73%). These characteristics are TERRIFIC for neighbors to have.!

In fact about two thirds (66%) of you said your feel the sense of community on this block is "just about right."

SAFETY

We were generally left with the impression that Luwanna is a quiet, peaceful street, with little crime. There is a concern that speeding cars endanger the children, and that there have been incidences of vandalism and theft. The majority of you (93%), however, say there is less crime on Luwanna than on other blocks in the neighborhood or city. Another plus is that 40% of you mentioned that there is an adult at home during the day. Those of you who stay at home have important role of watching out for the block!

WORKING TOGETHER

An overwhelming 80% of you are interested in working with your neighbors to improve conditions on Luwanna. And, 20% of you expressed interest in assuming a leadership role on the block!. With this level of interest, any of you who would like to start a project should be able to find lots of help! Some of the ideas you suggested include:

STABILITY

In responding to how long you plan to continue living on Luwanna, you were divided evenly into thirds. One third of you plans to stay between 1 and 3 years, one third plans to stay 10-20 years, and one third plans to stay over 25 years (or forever, whichever comes fist!). There is a large proportion of people who plan to stay here for a while. This long term commitment will help maintain Luwanna’s stability.

OVERALL

The main point that we’d like to leave you with is that Luwanna is a GREAT block where people like and watch pout for each other. There are some concerns, but there is a also a large number of people who are interested in helping make Luwanna even better.
