We would like to share with you the result of our
study. So, brace yourself because you’re about to know what 30 of your
neighbors think about Howe Street....

W. HOWE IS HOME
What is exceptional on your block is that, many of you have made Howe Street your home for many years now. Based on our survey, we found out that the average stay of families on the block is approximately 12 years. Many of you expressed a sense of belonging and attachment that you feel toward your block.
Several of your neighbors like the idea that residents
on Howe Street are very diverse. About 30% of households have children
under the age of 12 and a few families on the block have teenagers. There
is also quite a number of elderly residents who live on your block with
their families.
NEIGHBORS HELPING NEIGHBORS
"Neighboring" occurs on your block, according to most of you. This means, for example, that most of you feel comfortable borrowing from and lending things to your neighbors. About a third of the residents who participated in our survey mentioned, that people take care of each other’s plants and pets or watch out for each other’s kids. Most especially, neighbors readily give rides to neighbors who need one. This act of generosity and kindness among you demonstrates a spirit of "communityness" is a highly sought attribute of any community at the present. No wonder most of you would like to continue living on Howe Street for as long as you are able to.
You also indicated that people on the block are friendly
and comfortable to talk to, which strengthens neighborly relationships
among residents on the block.
SAFE AND CONVENIENT
Most of you feel very lucky to be enjoying the convenience of living near the school, grocery stores, playgrounds as well as having an easy access to public transportation. We don’t blame you!! Most of us look for those conveniences when deciding where to live.
There is a strong agreement among you that your block
is a safe place to live (67%). In fact, more than half of you said you
feel safe walking on the street at night. Additionally, your neighbors
believe that if there are criminal activities occurring on the block, such
activities must be less compared to any other blocks in Lansing.
ISSUES
We did not hear any of you discussing about why you
prefer not to get involved in community activities. But several of you
expressed the need to get together, to have social activities, and to organize,
to improve the sense of community among neighbors. Also, some of you pointed
out that your road needs to be fixed. In addition, many of you mentioned
that overspeeding cars on the street pose a threat to the safety of the
residents on Howe.
WE CAN DO IT!
Although there was a lack of interest in assuming a leadership role from most of you (86%), and many of you do not participate in community activities that are organized on the block, you strongly believe that as a group, residents can address needs and other issues on the block. Also, most of you care for one another and support each other. Overall, most of you expressed that you are happy and contented living on Howe Street.
