Lansing MI
The Cleo Courier

Hello Cleo residents!

Thank you for participating in our survey a few months ago.  The purpose of the study was to determine how strong of a “sense of community” exists on Cleo.  To show our appreciation, we have developed this newsletter specifically for you.  We received an overwhelmingly high amount of support from you.  Here's what you said:

Strong Sense of Safety

85% of you told us that Cleo has less criminal activity than other blocks in Lansing.  In addition, 85% of you told us that it is fairly safe to walk on Cleo at night; 85% said that you can reduce the amount of crime on your block; and 100% of you told us that your block is a safe place to live.

Cleo Residents Support Connect with Each Other
  • People on this block comfort each other in times of need (50%).
  • People on this block feel comfortable borrowing and lending items from each other (55%).
  • People on this block know each other(65%).
  • People would give rides to each other if needed (70%).
  • People help each other out when someone has a problem (75%).
  • Residents can create a solution when faced with a problem (75%).

Lansing MI
Participation

Although only 15% of you indicated that you participate in social activities such as pot lucks, and 45% of you said that you participate in community improvement activities, 100% of you told us that you participate in the curbside recycling program.  Congratulations!

Some Issues of Concern

When asked the question, “what is the major problem facing this block”, you responded very similarly.  The most common response was the amount and speed of traffic.  Also, many said that renting was an issue, and that you were near crime.

Overall Sense of Community

65% of you told us that Cleo’s overall sense of community is “just about right”.  Although only 25% of you said that you would be interested in becoming a leader on your block, 85% of you said that you would be interested in working together to improve your conditions.  This is encouraging.  In addition, 20% of you said that you love living on Cleo and 75% said that you like it.  This ultimately says a lot about your block.

Once again, we would like to thank you for your participation in our study and letting us get to know a little about you and your neighbors.  If you have any questions concerning this project, please feel free to contact John Schweitzer at 353-9144, Urban Affairs, Michigan State University.
