That’s right, spectacular. As a reminder, the Urban
Affairs Programs at Michigan State University surveyed your street during
the months of September and October for the purpose of seeing how strong
a sense of community exists on your block. Ninety three percent (93%) of
you participated in the survey - by far the highest out of any other block.
Congratulations!! And what we found is interesting and intriguing. So,
how did you do? What did you say? And, best of all, how do you as a block,
feel about each other? For these answers and more.... READ ON!!

How strongly do we feel about each other.... Do we feel "CONNECTED?"
The answer is an emphatic YES!! Everyone who participated in the Sense of Community survey agreed that people on Bingham Street know each other. Nearly all of you, 92%, agreed that people on the block socialize with each other and talk to each other about community issues. This is something to get excited about because it means that your neighbors are truly "neighborly."
What’s our sense of belonging?
Although you don’t all share the same values, most of you (92%) said that you feel you belong on Bingham Street. Furthermore, you said that you are committed to the block’s future. And 85% of you agreed that you like each other. Again, a very positive response overall.
Does it get any better?
You bet it does. All of you mentioned that people on Bingham Street participate in various types of community improvement activities. These include anything from community clean-ups to the curbside recycling program. This shows tremendous care and dedication for the community. Social activities, such as potlucks and garage sales, are also big on this block.
Everything sounds great.....Are
there any wrinkles
that need ironing out?
Just a few. The biggest concern was with safety. The results were about even on the issue of safety. For example, only 54% of you thought that it was safe to walk on the block at night (46% did not know or disagreed). Nearly a third of you were not sure if you could persuade the city to respond to your needs. Many of you said that it is difficult for Bingham Street to keep stable residents, and that stable residents are what the block is looking for.
So, what can we do?
Well, we really can’t give you an answer because we feel that the block can come up with its own solutions and ....YOU agreed. All of you agreed that when faced with a problem, residents can create a solution. Furthermore most of you (92%) agreed that the residents can get things done to improve the block, and 85% of you believe that you have a voice regarding important community issues. Although most of you did not want to take on a leadership role, many of you were willing to lend a helping hand, This is great because we have some fairly young families on the block, the majority of whom like living here. Most of you intend to live here about 20 years on average. So, in short, there’s a great sense of community on this block, based on what you have told us.
Though there are some "worries," the interviewers felt that the residents on the block seem to take great pride in this block. You have been here for a long time and have seen the block become crime-riddened and recovered. In general, you all seem to look out for each other. There is willingness to help out, and this is coupled with a sense of "taking control" when needed. Both of these quality point to a great community for the future, and hopefully a continued effort on your part to come together and simply be NEIGHBORLY.
