Small
Stone This site is mostly
interested in advertising, but I include it here as an example of a
grass roots project trying to implement a vision, which you can read
about here.
Detroitmusic.com isn't as rich a site as one might hope, but it
does offer an on line jukebox
I think CityClub's page is interesting as an example of "underground"
culture. On the one hand, there are no signs designating the location
of CityClub--only insiders can find it. On the other hand, you can get
directions on the web. Is there a contradiction here? For a similar
reason, check out Acension UK,
which looks like a boarded up Chinese restaurant, unless your "in
the know."

MP3.com's
Detroit section
Hyperreal
has a brief description. It also has library page
which contains a Village Voice article and an essay
by Morgan Lang
For another fairly sophisticated treatment
of Detroit techno, see John Paul Molenda's "Techno's Role in the Capitalist World-System"
This alt.rav FAQ
includes a taxonomy of the various types of techno and how Detroit fits
into the grand scheme.
Cognition is an interesting site with archives of Andrew
Duke's "In the Mix." Check out the interview
with Detroit's Terrance Parker.

Compare these discussions of Detroit
with something like this Detroit News article called "How
Do You Define Detroit"
313 has descriptions of various
Detroit record
labels, including reviews of specific albums:
Underground Resistance:
"No Hope, No Dreams, No Love, My Only Escape Is Underground"
Techno is often conceived of as a means
of resistance. See for instance the brief discussions at D.PART
(Detroit . Pursuit and Resistance Technologies) especially here
and here.
s6313 I found this site interesting
and professional web magazine. A little audio intense, but with interesting
interviews and articles. Specific inquiries into the Detroit techno
community. Don't miss the brief but provocative "mission statement."
Reverb is also a rich site. I was particluarly interested
in the article
on the cement space gallery.
