SUBSCRIBING INSTRUCTIONS FOR SUBSCRIBING TO THE NPLC ELECTRONIC NETWORK

This database contains approx. 18,000 references on plant acyl-lipids. It is the product of hundreds of hours of work by a number of people. It is far from comprehensive, but we believe it is complete enough to be very useful. For example, on a 486 or Pentium computer it only takes a few seconds to search the database to find 14 references with ricinoleic in the title. We hope you will find this database helpful and that it will contribute to overall progress in plant lipid research.
Construction of the database was supported by the National Cooperative for Plant Lipid Research (NPLC) funded by the DOE/NSF/USDA Triagency Program in Plant Biology. Nicki Engeseth and Andrea Mathis played a major role in developing this database. Thanks also to Uwe Rossbach and Marilou Schultz for their help.

The NPLC database was constructed from several sources as follows:
1) AGRICOLA , This database of agricultural literature produced by the United States National Agricultural Library was searched with the following key words and with "category codes" to select primarily papers dealing with plants: ACETYL-CO*, ACID*, ACYL-CARRIER*, ACYL-CHAIN*, ACYL-CO*, ACYLGLU*, ACYLTRAN*, ALPHA, BETA-IPOPR*, BETA, BETA-KETOACYL*, CARDIOLIPIN, CARDIOLIPINS, CEPHALIN, CEPHALINS, CEREBROSID*, COMPOSITION*, CUTIN*, DIACYLGLYCER*, DIGALACTOSYL*, DIGLYCER*, DIPHOSPHATID*, FAT*, GALACTOLIPID*, GALACTOSYLDIGLY*, GLYCERID*, GLYCEROLIPID*, GLYCEROPHOS*, GLYCOLIPID*, GLYCOSPHINGO*, GLYOXY*, LECITHIN, LECITHINS, LIPID*, LIPOXYGEN*, MEMBRAN*, MONOGALACTOSYL*, MONOGLYCER*, MONOPHOSPHATID*, OMEGA, OXIDATION, PHOSPHATIDYL*, PHOSPHOGLY*, PHOSPHOLIPID*, SPHINGO*, SULPHOLIPID*, SULPHOQUINOVOSYL*, TRIACYLGLYCER*, TRIPHOSPHATID*, WAX*,.
The AGRICOLA search was performed from 1970 until early 1996. Approximately 15,000* references are from this source and many of these include abstracts.
2) A request for references was mailed and e-mailed to several hundred plant lipid researchers who have attended the biannual international symposia on plant lipids. Responses to this request were received by e-
mail or as references listed on paper. The paper versions were scanned and imported. We received many responses from scientists who have published in journals which are not included in AGRICOLA.
3) The tables of contents of the last 6 Proceedings of the International Symposia on Plant Lipids were scanned.
4) Denis Murphy provided a database of ca. 5000 references which he had collected.
5) Because inclusion in AGRICOLA is several months behind the publication date, some 1996 references were also obtained by searching other, more current databases.

The sources above have considerable overlap. As a result, duplicates arose in the database. Because of differences in reference formats, machine elimination was impossible in most cases and duplicate elimination was a difficult process. In addition, the process of optical scanning of the printed references sometimes introduces errors. Although a number of errors and many duplicates still exist, this will in most cases not interfere with the use of the database.
The database was designed to be used with the bibliographic software "Pro-Cite" which was produced and marketed by Personal Bibliographic Software, Inc. (PBS), Ann Arbor, Michigan. This company has recently been purchased by Research Information Services

A read-only version of the software is availabe at low cost.. It will allow you to use the database, but not to edit or add additional references. If you wish to have a complete version of the software, please contact RIS. For PC users, a Windows version of Pro-Cite, is available which is very convenient, but is rather slow with such a large database. Therefore, we recommend the DOS version at this time. Alternatively, you also may be able to import the references into a different database. As they become available, we will also attempt to put alternative forms of the database (EndNote, Reference Manager) onto this web page.

INSTRUCTIONS FOR LOADING THE NPLC-DATABASE FOR PC COMPUTERS

The version of this database which is available for PC computers requires Pro-Cite software. We hope to have a version for Reference Manager Software available soon.

The PC version of the database has been compressed by PKZIP software. In the compressed version it is approx. 8 MB. After it is uncompressed, the database will require approx. 25 MB of your hard disk. Please be sure you have this much space available.

-for the DOS zip (compressed) version down load zipnplc.zip --8MB click here to download now
To uncompress the database
1) First make a new directory on your computer called NPLCDATA.
2) Move the NPLCDATA.ZIP file and the programs PKUNZIP.EXE and PKZIPFIX.EXE to the new NPLCDATA directory on your computer.
3) From the NPLC directory on your computer type: pkunzip NPLCDATA.ZIP
5) The pkunzip program will now start the uncompression process. This will take several minutes. (We have occasionally received error messages during the uncompression process, but as far as we know, these have not altered the database in any major way. The PKZIPFIX program is also provided in case you are prompted to use it.)

After uncompression, the DOS database for ProCite software should now consist of the following files:

NPLCDATA.DAT 12,065,280 bytes
NPLCDATA.KEY 10,264,064 bytes
NPLCDATA.PMT 1,226 bytes
NPLCDATA.REC 259,584 bytes
NPLCDATA.SOR 1,201,664 bytes
NPLCDATA.SET 28,160 bytes
NPLCDATA.SRT 701,952 bytes

To use the database, follow the instructions in the Pro-Cite manual or reference card. It is MUCH faster to search using field designators such as AUTH or TITLE. (The first 37 references do not have authors due to data transfer problems while building the database.)

INSTRUCTIONS FOR DOWN-LOADING THE NPLC-DATABASE FOR MACINTOSH COMPUTERS

_ Versions of this database are currently available for Pro-Cite and for EndNote software.
To down load the EndNote version 10MBClick here todownload now

To down load the stuffed Mac Pro-cite Version -6.6MB Click here to down load now

Over 20 MB will be needed for the unstuffed database.

For the Mac disk version follow these instructions:

_ Load the UnStuffIt program by clicking twice on the UnStuffIt.sea file. This is a shareware program for expanding compressed files.

_ Open the UnStuffIt program.
_ Join the macnplc.stf.x files using 'Join' command and selecting macnplc.stf.1 file.
Progarm will automatically choose the remaining files in succession during joining. The resulting file will be named macnplc.stf
_ Expand macnplc.stf using the 'Expand' command. A folder containing the files below will be created:
macnplc data 11.4 MB
macnplc data.key 7.8 MB
