Goals: The second-year program in Spanish is designed as a continuation of the first-year program. Its principle objective is to sharpen students´ skills for communicating in Spanish by providing extensive opportunities to use the language, both as a vehicle for sharing information and for learning about aspects of Hispanic culture. In this course we will combine a systematic review of Spanish grammar with an increased emphasis on reading and writing skills.

Daily Class Work: Active participation in all class activities is vital if progress is to be achieved. Each week you and your instructor will assess your in-class participation.  Your weekly participation will be graded on a scale of 0 (lowest grade) to 20 (best possible participation).  Tardiness and unexcused abscences will deduct points from your weekly grade (-2 for each late arrival to class, -10 for an absence).  Listen closely to your instructor and to your classmates; think about how people say things in Spanish.  Speak Spanish at every opportunity.  Even if you don’t know a particular word (for example, un compromiso, a previous engagement), you can still express yourself using analogous ideas:  “No puedo ir al cine esta tarde, porque tengo que hacer otra cosa.”

Attendance: A fifth of your final grade depends on your daily effort in class. Since each class period is equivalent to a week of class (four 50-minute periods) in a normal term, perfect attendance is strongly recommended. Students who know that they are going to miss class should make arrangements with the instructor to discuss ways to make up the material.  Late work will only be accepted in the case of an excused absence.  Absences will only be excused upon the presentation of written documentation including a phone number.  Note that good test scores are not sufficient to pass this course. Please talk to me if you have questions or special circumstances in regard to these policies.

Exams: Dates are indicated on the syllabus. Keeping up with homework and active participation are the best methods of studying for these exams. No exam will be given before the date indicated on the Syllabus.  No exam will be made up after the corrected exams are returned to the class, regardless of written documentation.

Manual de laboratorio: From the very first day of class, you are to begin work on your Workbook (el Manual). Exercises in the Manual consist of vocabulary, grammar and reading lessons.  As these exercises correspond to the daily lessons, you will be expected to complete this work before coming to class. Your instructor will periodically collect assignments from the Manual to check your progress.  Homework assignments are provided in the Syllabus.  Work ahead as much as possible and your participation will improve. Note that the answers for some exercises are provided.  Students are expected to complete these exercises in the following manner:  1)  Answer all the questions to the best of your ability; 2)  Correct your answers against those in the back of the Manual using a pen of a different color.  Students who do not follow these directions will receive a zero for that particular assignment.  The listening activities will be completed in class.

Compositions: In addition to in-class writing and assignments from your Manual, you will be required to write Compositions. Topics will be related to the unit themes of the ¿Qué te parece? textbook.  All Compositions will be at least a full page in length, double-spaced, Times New Roman font size 12.  Each Composition should have an appropriate title that reflects your main ideas. At least one preliminary draft of each Composition will be returned to you with comments, suggestions and some corrections so that you can improve your final version.  Final versions of the Compositions will be graded according to the “Evaluation Criteria for Compositions” to be found in Appendix 3 of your textbook (page A11).  To receive full credit, a preliminary draft must be submitted for each composition (-25% standard deduction).  On the Syllabus, the date to hand-in the first version of a Composition is indicated by “Comp. 1A”; the final version is indicated by “Comp. 1B”.  “Taller de Comp.” indicates an in-class workshop, lasting no more than 50 minutes, where students will review and offer suggestions on the work of other students.

Oral Interview: During the last week of instruction you will spend between ten and fifteen minutes demonstrating your communication skills in an oral interview (entrevista oral). You will be evaluated on your ability to communicate using the skills you have developed during the semester. Topics will be based on the three Unidades that we will study in this course.  If your performance is above expectations, you will improve your Daily Class Work grade. If it is below expectations, you will lower your Daily Class Work grade.  Our regular class period on Monday, August 12, will be abbreviated to accommodate the entrevistas orales.

Final Exam: The examen final will be comprehensive.

General Information: All work, including compositions, will be turned in the day the instructor indicates and not thereafter. Failure to turn in work on time will constitute a zero.  All work will be turned in at the beginning of the class period.  Thus you should arrive to class promptly to turn in and receive credit for your written work.  Any homework completed in class will not receive credit.  Frequently we will work on our Manual in class; therefore, please bring your textbook (libro de texto) and Manual to class each day.

Incompletes are granted only in accordance with university policy and when at least 80% of the semester's work has been satisfactorily completed before the onset of the extenuating circumstances. Arrangements must be made before the end of the term in which the incomplete is to be given. Consult page 63 of the publication Academic Programs 2000-2002  for more information.  In a summer course such as this one, it will be exceedingly difficult to obtain an Incomplete.

Please contact the Acting Spanish Coordinator if there are any concerns you wish addressed:  Professor John Rauk, 256 Old Horticulture Building  (email:  rauk@msu.edu).
