Griffin Island

Griffin Island is a large island, roughtly 800 by 600 km, cold and inhospitable. I envision it a little like Iceland, but since I have never been there, it is hard to know. We decided to place it in the Banthe Sea, an area inacessible enough to justify the lack of interaction between the island and the continent of Genertela.
The winters are long and cold, the summer is short, and the spring even shorter. I guess much like my actual location: Michigan. During the dark and storm seasons, tempests at sea and the drifting icebergs from Valind's Glacier keep the island practically isolated from the reste of the world.
Griffin island has a volcanic origin. The mountains around the island are the product of ancien volcanic activity and some of the volcanos, mostly in the Fire Mountains, are still in activity. For that reason, the land is not rich, and a large part of the island is covered with rolling hills similar to the moors.

On this island , six races have managed to engage in constant raiding and limited war for over 600 years. They are

From "La Geste de Messir Storm" by Frederic de Caen (Floriat Fedora translation)

The territory is today roughtly divided as follows:

The orcs and their human allies occupy the south-west part of the island, from the coast to the Midir River. The capital of their kingdom is Ockless. Their forces have been stopped on the bank of the river, and the siege of Surlt has failed.
To the North of the orcish kingdom, the elves still resist in the Elf Forest. However, cut from their brothers on other parts of the island, their situation is becoming more and more precarious. After the serie of defeats inflicted on their human allies of Surlt, the full strenght of the orcish army will soon be directed toward them.

Between the river Midir and the river Morand is the kingdom of Surlt. Part of its former territory, west of the river Midir, is now in orcish hands. The king of Surlt is currently at war with the kingdom of Ockless. Understanding the extend of the danger, the neighboring kingdom of Nidik has chosen to forget their past differences and now support entirely the kingdom of Surlt. Nidik territory extend from the Morand river to the east coast.

In the middle of the island, a group of mountains known as the Dwarf Mountains harbor the last dwarf citadel. The dwarf king is an ally of the king of Nidik. He has so far refused to directly engage dwarven troops in the conflict, and support his ally by providing weapons and engineers. However, their treaty states that should Nidik territory be directly menaced by the orcs, the dwarven host, one more time, shall march against their old enemies. Recent reports indicate that the dwarf colony is in full stage of military build-up.

In the center west of the island, at the bottom of the Ostankach Bay, the city of Soldier Port can be found. This independant city-state has so far taken advantage of the commercial opportunities provided by the conflict, selling weapons and food to both sides alike. Its ruler appears interested in prolonging the conflict as long as it is possible and opposes any pacific resolution.

The Slarge territory is in the North-East corner of the island. For particuliar biological reasons explained somewhere else, the slarge clans have not taken any part in the conflict. Pessimists think that they simply wait to launch a major offensive as soon as the other races show the first sign of weakness. The lack of communication with the slarge empire does not allow verification of this hypothesis.

And finally, the middle-east part of the island is known as "The bad lands". It is the land of chaos, and chaos does not work with or against anyone. Unfortunately for Nidik, the bad lands are on its northern border, and from time to time the kingdom must face an invasion of broos and other monstrous creatures.

The trolls can be found in most of the various montains, mostly in families and small clans. They fight primarely on the side of the orcs, but some have been known to joint the human forces to oppose chaotic creatures.

The rest of the land is the territory of the Votanki Hunters. Some clans have fallen under the control of the various other factions, but most of them remain faithfull to their nomadic way of life and simply move away from the battleground.
