Our program has a number of unique assets including: a) integration of community and clinical training, b) location in the state capitol with easy accessibility to policymakers I elected and appointed positions, c) research and intervention access relatively easy in a variety of community settings, d) program interfaces with a significant emphasis on Prevention Science across the Psychology Department, e) strong collaborative relationships with state agencies and other units within the university including the School of Public Health, School of Medicine, and the Institute of Families in Society, f) long history of stable funding for students including departmental support, grants, and local agency contracts.
Being located in South Carolina, the program has a visible commitment
to training African-American psychologists and conducting research and
action relevant to this community. The program has a solid track record
in training African-American students. Over the last ten years on average
25% of the graduate students have been African-American. Ten percent of
the faculty are African-American. The Psychology Department sponsors an
annual Multicultural Symposium (initiated in 1981) bringing distinguished
scholars to campus for workshops and scientific presentations. The department
has as active Diversity Committee that seeks to integrate diversity concerns
through curriculum.
