The Michigan Lepidoptera Survey (MLS) is a project of the Michigan Entomological Society with the mission to document the identity, distribution and biology of Michigan's diverse lepidopteran fauna. The projects essential tasks are:
- to develop a computerized database of Michigan Lepidoptera records;
- to conduct field investigations to improve our understanding of Lepidoptera biology and biodiversity, particularly in critical habitats and poorly surveyed areas of the state; and
- to distribute information about Michigan Lepidoptera through publications and educational outreach projects.
Survey participants are concentrating field studies in critical habitats (i.e. coastal dunes, prairie remnants, fens, heath bogs, etc.) and seldom collected areas of the state such as Berrien, Gogebic, Monroe, Ontanogon, Presque Isle counties and Great Lakes islands.
This survey is a long-term project that will require the help and cooperation of many people who are seriously interested in, and knowledgeable about, Michigan's butterfly and moth fauna.
