WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The Labor Department said first-time jobless claims -- a guide to the job market and the pace of layoffs -- fell 10,000 to a revised 418,000 for the prior week, but well above the Wall Street forecast for 407,000. The figure extended its run over the key 400,000 level to six weeks.

Labor had originally reported claims at 421,000 for the April 20 week.

After medical advances led to a decline of tuberculosis in the United States, Congress eliminated all funding dedicated to fighting the disease in 1972. The subsequent collapse of TB public health systems in the late 1980s fostered a new outbreak of the disease -- including new drug-resistant strains. Fighting the resurgence cost the United States billions of dollars -- as much as $1 billion in New York City alone.
