Tonight we played a number of cuts of the new Lyle Lovett anthology “Cowboy Man”, along with some great zydeco stomps and waltzes courtesy of the late, great Boozoo Chavis, whose final studio album hit stores last week. Other interesting new releases from Chris Whitley, Dexter Romweber and Raul Malo. Finally, we last week we learned from a listener that the version “I’ll Fly Away” that is played in the film of “O’Brother, Where Art Thou?” (it is a different, older-sounding version than the Alison Krauss and Gillian Welch version) was recorded by a sister duo called the Kossoy Sisters in the mid-50s. With a little tracking down, we were able to find the reissued CD of that album on Tradition records called “Bowling Green”.  The rest of the album is also excellent - eerie and bizarre, like many traditional songs are, but you would probably wouldn’t guess that a couple of college girls were singing these stark renditions.
