Tical
Method Man |
Method man comes at us
with this Wu-tang solo effort, affectionately called Tical. This
album was one of the first signs of the Wu-tang clan's slow drift
away from one another. It's also a terrific representation of the
Wu-Tangs most heralded rapper, Method Man. So that being said, if
Method man is supposed to be the most gifted member of Wu-tang,
then I really fear for the other members of this Brooklyn rap group.
Because this shit is flat out poor!
I just don't see it?
Method Mans voice is scratchy and his style is random, and messy.
He sounds like he is rapping under a towel. He has a horrible problem
staying in tune with the beat; his flow seems to disregard it altogether.
This is unfortunate because the beats are the only slightly redeeming
quality on this album. It's also unfortunate because Method Man
does show signs of real talent, but they are few and far between.
This album has absolutely
no blowout hits at all, which hurts it tremendously. There is nothing
that just makes you say, "whoa that's the shit", instead you probably
will say "whoa that's reg". And that's exactly what I feel about
this album, its just too run of the mill. The lyrics have absolutely
no meaning. Method Man is a master at putting together a rhyme that
sounds cool but has no real story, or real direct message. This
drabble is also interchangeable between songs. Meaning you could
switch around all the beats and the raps and make a new album and
you would have a hard time telling the difference. There are however
many quality lines none the less, which show Meths ability to rhyme
words in a very ingenious way. Looking for these snippets is hard
but can be entertaining.

So shouldn't slam the
whole album because there are some bright points. Some of the beats
are quite entertaining and original, and sometimes Method man does
rhyme tight on the mic, where you might almost be convinced. But
when the songs tend to drag on and on, with the same mindless rhymes,
it gets tiring. And while there are some beats that are excellent,
80% of them are downright shab. The beats are simple and unimaginative.
While they are oriented on the baseline, they are weak baselines,
which could be a lot deeper. But overall I think that the beats
are tolerable to a point.
I guess I should take
in to account the fact that this is a very early effort and that
Method Man does at least show some promise. But they are no denying
that this album is not a groundbreaking effort. Perhaps Method Man
should have relied on his blunted brothers a littte more? Maybe
then he could have captured some of the Wu-Tang feel that is missing
in the Tical.
Favorite line[s]
"Brothers want to
hang with the Meth, bring the rope. The only way you hang is by
the neck"
- This is a testimat
to Method mans potential; this line is quite good and very crafty.
Favorite track
"Release Yo'
Delf" This track is my favorite because of the great
beat. Its easily the best on the album.
Total Tracks: 13
Skipped Tracks: 7
Recommend: Skip it
Good
This album I do not recommend,
even die-hard Wu fans should think twice. It lacks the Wu feel,
which hurts, not enough of the cool kung fu references I think.
